/PRNewswire/ -- New research adds to the growing body of evidence that modified citrus pectin (MCP), a natural supplement derived from the pith of citrus fruit, has a powerful effect against cancer. In a study just published in the March 2013 issue of the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, MCP enhanced the anti-cancer effects of two botanical formulas, one for breast cancer and one for prostate cancer. The combination treatment decreased cancer cell aggressiveness, reduced migration and inhibited metastasis in highly metastatic MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells and aggressive, PC-3 hormone refractory human prostate cancer cells. The study was conducted by researchers at the Cancer Research Laboratory at Indiana University Health.

"Metastasis is what makes cancer so deadly," said head investigator Dr. Daniel Sliva, associate professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine. "It's no secret that specific proteins in cancer cells cause aggressive behavior. We now know that by combining modified citrus pectin with these formulas, we can further suppress aggressive cancer activity and significantly reduce metastasis."

The researchers determined that the breast and prostate formulas by themselves decreased cancer aggressiveness, measured by cell adhesion to human fibronectin, a key component in the extracellular matrix, as well as cancer cell migration and invasion. However, when combined with MCP, the anti-cancer effects of both formulas were significantly increased.

The unique anti-breast cancer formula, which contains botanically enhanced medicinal mushrooms, diindolylmethane (an active form of a compound found in cruciferous vegetables) and a variety of botanical extracts, decreased breast cancer cell adhesion by 21 %. However, when co-administered with MCP, researchers observed a 40 % decrease. The anti-cancer effects of this breast formula have been shown in previous published studies to reduce aggressive breast cancer proliferation and metastasis by up to 70 %. This is now the third peer reviewed study showing the safety and efficacy of this anti-breast cancer formula in pre-clinical models.

In addition, the unique anti-prostate cancer formula, which contains a comprehensive blend of antioxidants, herbal extracts, and botanically enhanced medicinal mushrooms, decreased prostate cancer cell adhesion by 9 % in this study. However, when MCP was added, adhesion was reduced by as much as 40 %. Cancer cell migration was also reduced by these combination therapies. This is the fourth peer reviewed published study to demonstrate the anti-cancer effects of this botanical prostate formula in pre-clinical studies.

"This study is very significant because it demonstrates the importance of combining targeted anti-cancer compounds which can work together synergistically for greater impact against the disease," said co-author and integrative medicine expert Isaac Eliaz, MD.  "MCP makes these formulas significantly more effective. Furthermore, the powerful anti-cancer actions demonstrated by these combinations offer a safe and effective adjuvant therapy to patients with aggressive cancers who wish to increase the efficacy of their current treatment regimen."

The researchers also investigated levels of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), a protein marker for aggressive cancers. High uPA levels have been found to promote cancer cell adhesion, migration and invasion. Both formulas have been shown in previous research to reduce uPA. Again, combining these formulas with MCP resulted in further suppression of uPA.

Numerous studies have shown that MCP binds and blocks galectin-3, a signaling protein associated with cancer aggressiveness, angiogenesis, aggregation and metastasis. MCP has also been found to significantly increase the immune response including natural killer (NK) cell activation, with demonstrated activity against human leukemia cells. Furthermore, in addition to its synergistic actions with botanical formulas, MCP has been shown to work synergistically with chemotherapeutic agents, such as doxorubicin, allowing for greater efficacy, lower dosages and fewer side effects.

The big winter flu shot vaccine push is on! You are about to be bombarded with endless messages to "get vaccinated!" They're even starting to lay a guilt trip on those who refuse vaccinations.

For the record, all the healthiest people walking around who don't catch the flu are the ones who refuse flu shots while taking care of their immune system. It's the vaccinated people who always seem to be sick for one reason or another, have you noticed?

In any case, it's important to find ways to boost your immune system and shield yourself from colds and the flu without resorting to jabbing yourself in the arm with a cocktail of mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum and MSG. Oh yes, all those things are found in vaccines, according to the CDC.

In fact, if you really like shooting up with brain-damaging mercury and essentially giving yourself a chemical lobotomy, just take more vaccines! It's the only legal way to inject these chemicals into your body where they will quickly enter your bloodstream and be delivered right to your brain!

So to avoid all that, here's a list of ways to boost your immune system without resorting to deadly vaccines and all the toxic additives they contain.

Take a vitamin D supplement every day. (we can help you buy quality/patented products at huge discounts, ask us how)

Get as much sunlight as you can for as late into the year as you can manage. Even getting sunlight on just your face helps produce more vitamin D in your body.

Drink immune-boost beverages. (Again, do not go to your local store and expect to buy a cost effective product there)

Use a high-quality air filter in your home to filter out bacteria and mold spores that may be circulating inside your home.

Get regular exercise to boost your circulation and immune strength. This exercise should be frequent and moderate. Do not over-stress yourself at the gym, or your immune system will be temporarily compromised.

Take supplements especially designed to protect your respiratory tract. (We can give you the correct information and recommendation)

Take measures to minimize your exposure to immune-damaging chemicals such as those you'll find in laundry products, cosmetics, personal care products and fragrance products. The artificial fragrance chemicals found in most of these products are carcinogenic and cause liver damage. (There is simply no excuse for harming your family this way. There are more effective products available that are non toxic and cheaper to use that what you are using today)

Get off all medications that you can safely eliminate! Work with a Doctor/Naturopath to accomplish this, because quitting medications cold turkey can also be very dangerous. Most medications suppress your immune system, liver function, kidney function and even your reproductive function.

Eat more meals that are rich in pungent spices. Eat more curry, which is rich in turmeric. Eat more ginger. Eat more cilantro, rosemary, thyme and other rich spices. This includes cloves and nutmeg, two spices you'll typically find in eggnog drinks. These spices boost immune function and taste great, too!

Clean up your diet. If you're eating cheese and drinking processed milk, those substances are to be avoided during the winter influenza season. In many people, cheese and dairy products tend to cause sinus stuffiness, which is really a lack of sinus circulation. This can make you more susceptible to physically catching and harboring a virus floating around.

Boost your trace minerals intake, especially zinc. Both zinc and selenium are hugely important for immune function. Zinc is especially well known for functioning as a shield support against many viral attacks. One of the best ways to boost your trace minerals intake is to switch to a natural sea salt or a high-mineral salt.

Move your lymph! Rebounders (mini trampolines) are great for this purpose. Jumping rope also works, as does just hopping in place for a few minutes each day. You can also do arm rotations and other simple movements to keep your lymph circulating. Lymph movement is crucial for immunity.

Take immune-protective herbal tinctures such as goldenseal, garlic, echinacea, osha root and elderberry.

While you're at it, wash your hands more frequently. Many of the infections we receive during the flu season come from us touching contaminated surfaces and then touching our eyes, nose or mouth. The simple act of washing your hands can dramatically cut down on viral infections

Get plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep compromises the immune system.

Reduce your levels of chronic stress, if possible. Stress also compromises your immune system, and it even "uses up" nutrients in your body, leaving you nutritionally depleted.

Laugh a lot! Watch some comedy movies, or spend some fun time with family and friends. Laughter boosts immune function at many levels. It's good for your body and your mental health. Find creative ways to expose yourself to comical situations and you'll benefit as a result.

Timely News for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Read Dr. Eliaz’s article published the October 2012 issue of the Nutraceutical Business & Technology Journal, reprinted here for our readers:

Botanical Formula Delivers Powerful Support for Breast Health
By Isaac Eliaz, M.D., M.S., L. Ac.

Not long ago, there was a stark dividing line between pharmaceutical drugs and nutritional supplements. The perception was that pharmaceuticals are intensely researched (which they are) and highly effective (but not as often as we’re sometimes promised). On the other hand, claims made about nutritional supplements were thought to be based entirely on anecdotal evidence and long-standing cultural traditions. But in recent years, the substantial upsurge in research and clinical applications within the field of integrative medicine has broadened this perception. As a result, the divisive paradigm separating conventional medicine and alternative is gradually shifting to include natural therapies validated by peer reviewed science. One emerging term which represents this integration of allopathic and complementary/alternative medicines, is the word “nutraceutical,” used to describe a medicine-grade supplement backed by substantial published research. As more scientific studies have been devoted to nutrition, and sophisticated technologies like genomic sequencing applied in such investigations, we have learned a great deal about how the foods we eat, and the supplements we take, affect us on a molecular level. I have been involved in such research for over 20 years and in addition, have seen many nutraceutical preparations make an important difference in my medical practice.

The Research
One such nutraceutical formula demonstrating important preclinical results in published trials, is an integrative, nutraceutical supplement designed specifically to promote breast cellular health. Since the formula’s inception in 2010, it has been independently researched, with pre-clinical results published in peer reviewed journals demonstrating its ability to slow aggressive breast cancer.1,2,3

Perhaps the most significant attribute of this integrative formula is its proven ability to fight breast cancer metastasis. In the most recent study, presented at the American Academy of Cancer Research (AACR), scientists at Indiana University Health’s Cancer Research Laboratory found that the formula slows highly invasive human breast cancer growth and inhibits breast to lung metastasis in mice.1 The ability to control metastasis is critical. As many as 90 percent of all cancer deaths are attributed to this uncontrolled invasion.

In this study, researchers implanted highly invasive, triple-negative human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) in the breast tissue of mice, which were then given the botanical breast formula orally for four weeks. Results found that the breast cancer metastasized in 70 percent of controls but only 20 percent of treated mice. In the treated mice that did develop metastasis, the number of metastases per animal was significantly reduced by the formula.

Digging deeper, the researchers found that the formula partially blocks two well-known cancer-promoting genes (PLAU and CXCR4). Both of these genes have been implicated in metastasis, so decreasing their expression is of critical importance in treating aggressive cancer. Without metastasis, cancer becomes a localized phenomenon that can often be removed surgically or treated with radiation, chemotherapy or an integrative approach which draws on diverse medical modalities.

Equally significant, the formula produced no detectable side-effects. Given the rigors caused by many traditional cancer treatments, this is very good news indeed.

This was the third peer-reviewed pre-clinical study to demonstrate the formula’s anti-cancer/anti-metastasis activity. Further studies on this formula are underway. However, there is still a great deal of work to be done. Ultimately, I envision botanical formulas like this being used side by side with new pharmaceuticals which will also target the genetic underpinnings of cancer. The result will be more effective treatments and fewer side effects.

Formula Details
This formula is a combination of specific nutrients shown to protect breast cells, support hormone metabolism and enhance immunity.

The formula includes a highly absorbable form of turmeric extract; the antioxidant Quercetin; a proprietary extract of Scutellaria barbata, and Astragalus extract; medicinal mushrooms Trametes versicolor (Coriolus), Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), and Phellinus linteus which are grown on an immune enhancing and cellular supporting botanical mixture; and the indole diindolylmethane (DIM).

DIM is particularly significant. The compound is a common byproduct from digesting cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower, kale and others. Research shows that DIM supports the immune system and helps balance out our hormones, estrogen in particular. Estrogen breaks down into a variety of different metabolites, some of which are quite beneficial, providing anti-oxidant support. Other metabolites can derail cellular health. You might liken this to cholesterol: You want to raise the beneficial types and reduce the detrimental metabolites. DIM achieves this balance for estrogen. (Formula details visit BreastHealthFormula.org)

Each of the ingredients in this formula has been extensively researched on their own. But what was very interesting to me as a holistic, integrative physician and healer, is that the researchers studying this formula were able to demonstrate a synergistic effect between the ingredients. Such synergy allows results that would not be achieved by each ingredient alone, at the dosages in which they are present in the formula. This is of specific importance because the synergistic effect goes beyond just the interaction of ingredients within a formula.

Synergy is at the foundation of mind-body medicine; it’s about understanding the person as a whole and it’s what the holistic interactions between different organs, emotions, and systems of the body, are based on. Part of my commitment to integrative medicine, is to find therapies which reflect these holistic principles within a formula’s design, showing synergistic effects and benefiting numerous critical areas of health simultaneously.

Walls Torn Down
Investigations like the Indiana University studies affirm what many of us have suspected for decades: Thousands of years of Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbal lore carry a great deal of truth. While it was easy in the past to dismiss botanical formulas due to “lack of evidence,” that line of reasoning is becoming much more difficult to sustain.

This is only one example. There are numerous therapeutic natural resources available to us. Some are being uncovered even as this is being written. These solutions will provide the additional tools we need in the prevention and treatment of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, inflammation, autoimmune disorders and many other conditions.

We post many studies on this site in the hope that you gather important information from them. If you follow this site you can see the unmistakable link between toxins and good health. This is why we continue to harp on getting toxins out of your home. This should be your foremost priority, make your home environment safe!

Below is a quick overview of another study;

Maintaining lung health by not smoking, exercising and eating well is linked to better problem-solving in aging, U.S. researchers say.

Lead author Charles Emery, professor of psychology at Ohio State University, and colleagues analyzed data from a Swedish study that tracked participants' health measures for almost two decades.

Their analysis, published in the journal Psychological Science, found reduced pulmonary function can lead to the brain's diminished problem-solving and processing speed as a person ages -- two types of "fluid" cognitive brain function.

"The logical conclusion from this is that anything you could do to maintain lung function should be of benefit to fluid cognitive performance as well," Emery said in a statement. "Maintaining an exercise routine and stopping smoking would be two primary methods. Nutritional factors and minimizing environmental exposure to pollutants also come into play."

Emery said the finding offered insight into the process of human aging. One theory of aging is that all functions slow at the same rate, but this study suggests some aspects of functional decline contribute to a change in the rate of other areas of decline.

"It starts to speak to the bigger question: What are the processes involved in aging?" Emery said.

Winning the Battle Against Breast Cancer Metastasis * Reuters is not responsible for the content in this press release.

o    Botanical formula slows highly invasive human breast cancer growth, reduces metastasis.

o    Formula includes extracts from medicinal mushrooms and herbs and other natural compounds.

o    No toxic side effects were detected.

CHICAGO, May 8, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Scientists at Indiana University Health's Cancer Research Laboratory have found that a sophisticated botanical formula slows human breast cancer growth and inhibits breast to lung metastasis in mice. The formula contains extracts from medicinal mushrooms, medicinal herbs and purified nutritional compounds, and showed no toxic side-effects. These results were presented at the April 2012 American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting .

"Our results are very exciting because we clearly demonstrate the suppression of breast to lung cancer metastasis associated with the inhibition of specific pro-metastatic genes in human tumors," says Daniel Sliva, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine and lead author on the study.

Researchers implanted highly invasive, triple-negative human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) in mice, which were then given the formula orally for four weeks. The formula significantly decreased tumor growth and breast to lung metastasis. The cancer metastasized to the lungs in 70 percent of controls but only 20 percent of treated mice. The number of metastases per animal was also significantly reduced by the formula. Further study showed the formula down-regulates the primary tumor genes PLAU (urokinase plasminogen activator, uPA) and CXCR4 (C-X-C chemokine receptor-4), which have both been implicated in metastasis.

"Patients with breast cancer die from metastasis," said formula inventor and study co-author Isaac Eliaz, M.D. "This formula was able to change the gene expression of highly aggressive metastatic breast cancer and dramatically decrease the deadly metastatic process."

The formula uses a variety of natural compounds, each of which have demonstrated anti-cancer properties. Mycelium from medicinal mushrooms Coriolus versicolorGanoderma lucidum andPhellinus linteus reduced growth and invasiveness. Extracts from Scutellaria barbataAstragalus membranaceus and Curcuma longa are known to induce programmed cell death (apoptosis) and reduced metastasis. The flavonoid quercetin reduced proliferation and helped suppress tumor growth. In addition, 3, 3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM), an active byproduct of cruciferous vegetable digestion, reduced cancer growth, migration and invasiveness.

"Here, we show that the formula is not toxic and its oral application significantly suppresses time-dependent increase in tumor sizes and inhibits breast-to-lung cancer metastasis," says Dr. Sliva. "This formula may be considered as a biological therapeutic agent against invasive breast cancer, including the aggressive triple negative breast cancer. It can potentially increase survival of breast cancer patients."
